Qatar to double sulphur production: Attiyah

With gas projects recently completed and more to be commissioned, Qatar’s sulphur production is set to double from the current 1.2 to 2.5 million tonnes per annum by 2015, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, told a symposium here yesterday.

In his welcoming address to the Sulphur Institute’s Sulphur World Symposium 2010 which is being held for the first time in Doha, Attiyah said Qatar is poised to become a major sulphur exporter in the GCC having set up a $1bn state-of-the-art Common Sulphur Facility (CSF).

The facility is designed to handle 12,000 tonnes per day of liquid sulphur and convert it into granules, which will be stored in a silo and exported to customers worldwide. “Qatar takes pride in its sulphur exports, a by-product from petroleum products. It is important that sulphur is removed from our gas streams and exported in a timely and cost-efficient manner; thus ensuring that our LNG products comply with the most stringent global environmental regulations,” said Al Attiyah.

The two-day symposium is being organised by the Sulphur Institute (TSI) and hosted by Qatar International Marketing Company (Tasweeq) and is intended to introduce Qatar as a growing producer of sulphur, which is widely used in the manufacture of fertilizers. [Read More]
