Qatar Air Drops First-Class Cabins From New Aircraft


Qatar Airways, whose backlog of aircraft orders is the biggest of any carrier, will eliminate first-class cabins in some of the planes scheduled for delivery.

Luxury seating will be omitted from an unspecified number of jetliners pending an upgrade of the Doha-based airline’s business-class berths, Chief Executive Officer Akbar al-Baker said today at a news conference in Berlin.

“We have made this decision as we will introduce a new outstanding business class in 2011,” Al-Baker said, adding that the airline “hasn’t many first-class cabins.”

Qatar Airways, whose premier cabins offer a stand-up bar, cream leather sofa and teak tables with lampshades, is replacing the berths with business seats after the recession dented demand for top-end travel.[Read More]
