DOHA: Students of University of Calgary – Qatar (UCQ) have joined the legions of individuals, groups and organisations around the world in the fight against breast cancer. A group of UCQ students organised a special registration and presentation about the upcoming ‘Walk of Life’ that will take place in Doha October 30.
Think Pink Qatar is dedicated to raising awareness of Breast Cancer which can help aid in the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
“Breast cancer is ever-increasing and has become a serious problem everywhere,” said Yassmin Hussein, a nursing student and a member of the event organising committee. “We are hoping to raise awareness and try to stop or at least slow the spread of the awful disease. We will soon be nurses and it is a disease that we have to deal with. We need to do something to reduce the number of patients in hospital with cancer of any kind. The statistics in Qatar are alarmingly high.”
Dr. Tam Donnelly, an Associate Professor who has done extensive research on breast cancer said, “Breast cancer can be prevented through physical exercise, breastfeeding and a healthy diet. There are survivors out there and that is positive news in our efforts to beat cancer and increase the survival rate.” Marja Alexander, a volunteer with the Think Pink organisation in Doha told the students during the event, “Early detection is the best preventive measure and that comes from regular self-examination.”
The ‘Walk of Life’ will take place along the Corniche from the Qatar National Museum to the Sheraton Hotel.
